TeraView Ltd, the pioneer and leader
in terahertz technology and solutions applied for the
pharmaceutical and life science industry, is broadening
the industry expertise in the boardroom with two new
appointments. Dr. Barrie Thorpe, formerly Executive Vice-President,
Operations at Astra Zeneca, takes on only his second
non-executive directorship and Dr Andrew Carr (formerly
director of Amersham plc) has joined as non-executive
chairman.
“Early adopters have now proven
that TeraView’s terahertz products solve real business
issues.” said TeraView chief executive officer,
Don Arnone, “We are now taking terahertz solutions
to the mainstream pharmaceutical drug development and
manufacturing markets, where Barrie’s and Andrew’s
experience will be invaluable.”
Barrie Thorpe, who headed the world
wide manufacturing and supply organisation for AstraZeneca
and its predecessors for over 16 years, said: “TeraView
has the potential to extend and complement the analytical
techniques used for improving product formulation and
manufacturing science and control in the pharmaceutical
industry, as well as other application areas. I look
forward to working with the Board to rapidly expand TeraView’s
global presence.”
Andrew Carr brings 20 years’ experience
of life science systems innovation and commercialization.
He was previously a director of Amersham plc (FTSE 100)
and CEO of Amersham Biosciences, the life science-based
company serving researchers and biopharmaceutical manufacturers. “TeraView
has very successfully moved terahertz technology into
robust products for the pharmaceutical and electronics
industries that will deliver a step–change improvement
in their ability to visualize and measure the distribution
of active chemical compounds” commented Andrew
Carr. “The Company is poised to build on early
commercial success by focusing on opportunities with
blue chip customers in the pharmaceutical and related
sectors.”
TeraView has secured financial backing
from the San Jose-based KT Venture Group, the corporate
investment arm of $2B semiconductor inspection market
leader, KLA-Tencor (NASDAQ:KLAC).
Ady Levy, senior business development
director at KLA-Tencor, said “Following a review
of terahertz companies, KLA-Tencor sought out TeraView
as the market leader to commercially exploit this new
region of the light and radio wave spectrum. “
“ The addition of KLA-Tencor,” said Don Arnone, “will facilitate
better mutual understanding of how THz can be exploited in the electronics and
related industrial inspection markets. This partnership is also an excellent
opportunity for the company to further build our US business.”
TeraView is the world’s first
company devoted to the application of THz light for spectroscopy
and imaging in pharmaceutical drug development and manufacture.
TeraView’s technology can improve the quality of pharmaceutical
products and decrease the risk of regulatory non-compliance, leading
to potentially safer tablets and savings arising from faster times to
market and volume production of higher quality, stable products. Other
markets for the technology exist in early stage cancer detection, defence
and industrial inspection which are explored via commercial partners.
Headquartered in Cambridge, UK, TeraView was spun-out of the Toshiba
Cambridge Research Laboratory in April 2001. Sales and support are available
throughout Europe, North America and the Far East either directly or
through a network of distributors.
Terahertz radiation lies in unique
region of the spectrum between the microwaves and infrared,
and was the last unexploited region of the light and
radio wave spectrum.
